Meditation, psychological functions and when yo need to make choices
Sensing as a tool for awareness, meditation.
Yesterday I went to a beach. I parked the bike and stepped my feet to the sand to walk towards the water.I could smell the ocean and it triggered my thinking. Eventually picked a spot to sit, to just be. Consciously choosing to have my awareness in sensing. Smelling the air, hearing birds, feeling the wind and the warmth of the sun. Memories passed by, the desert, the bike ride with my husband when I was at the beginning of a pregnancy of our daughter, realising that I live here, in this land. Emotions triggered. Imagination taking place, remembering an old desire. Letting all float, observing and coming back to sensing. Feeling the sand underneath. I laid down and looked at the blue sky, felt the sand softly blowing to the top of the head. Closed my eyes, feeling the weight of my body. In breath, outbreath.. inhaling, exhaling. Till it was the right moment (intuition) to open my eyes, to sit back up and just look around, eventually to get up and walk to the bike. Going back the wind was behind my back, I felt light, there was joy, inspiration, energy.
In Psychosynthesis there is an idea that we function through 6 psychological functions; thinking, sensing, emotions, imagination, desire/impulse and intuition. Some of them we might use more than others but they all inform us, especially when making decisions.
If you are deliberating on any questions or decision/choice, it could be interesting to see what each of these functions inform. Eg. What do I think about it, what does my sensing body inform, what kind of feelings does this bring up in me, how would I imagine it to be, do I desire this, and what does my intuition say..
These functions can also be in specific sequences. Some might take you to an aligned choice and some sequences to more distorted behaviour or negative spin. Eg. you might have a thought about something, that creates emotion, followed by bodily sensation, then imagination plays a role and impulse comes along and intuition informs something too (this could be someones aligned or negative spin). Negative bringing you away from your center, to sub personalities (survival strategies that has worked in the past but might not have the full capacity to look at the whole picture).
To stay in the self, to have a sense of connection, awareness and free will to choose, we are able to access all the functions, in this centred self space where we can observe rather than be overtaken by one or few functions.
Psychosynthesis teacher Dorothy Firman has written an article about this "Who is riding the carriage" and this is the pointer to having 6 horses (psychological functions) and you. Is it you who chooses and directs or one or few horses that takes the lead. Sometimes it can be nice if the horse takes you to beautiful places but you might like to imagine yourself if those horses are all the time in charge.
Coming back to meditation. It can be also a mean to experience this sense of self, what it is to be centred, present, aware, to have will to choose from aligned place. Ultimately it can also be an experience of oneness, unity, pure Love ❤️
And the meditation, it doesn't need to be only directed to sensing. I chose that yesterday as it might be helpful to have one focus and it was easy in that environment but it can also be awareness of whatever is there in presence. Recognising the thinking, emotions, different sensations and coming back to witnessing when you are overtaken by the thoughts, emotions, sensations. Not to suppress them, allowing and being present with them.
